On the mechanical equivalence of heat
The quantity of work that must be expended at sea-level in the latitude of Greenwich in order to raise the temperature of one pound of water, weighed in vacuo, by one degree Fahrenheit from 6o° to 61° F is equivalent to the mechanical force which could raise 772.55 pounds through the distance of one foot.
